Old Man of The Mountain Museum

The Old Man of The Mountain was first discovered and recorded in 1805 by road surveyors but was likely first formed when water inside cracks in the granite bedrock froze and thawed roughly 12,000 years ago. On May 3rd of 2003, the Old Man came tumbling down the mountain and was no longer watching over the state of New Hampshire.

This spectacular piece of nature is remembered at the Old Man of The Mountain Historic Site, located at the foot of the mountain he had fallen from. Stop by the Historic Site to learn more about the history of the Old Man.
