Family Weekend Staycations

Summer’s just around the corner, which means it’s high time to plan a family staycation-style getaway right here in the White Mountains with unbeatable accommodations at The Mountain Club on Loon.

Of course, there are year-round reasons to enjoy our slopeside hospitality in the shadow of Loon Mountain, but many of our guests especially thrill at all the summertime delights in our backyard—from outdoor recreation to amusement rides. Here’s a brief overview of only a mere few of the enticements just about tailor-made for staycation fun with the whole gang!

Outdoor Recreation in the White Mountains

Whether you’re trekking to view-rich summits, doing your best to see one of those majestic New Hampshire moose, surging along a whitewater river, or mountain biking to your heart’s content, the White Mountains are a fantastic place for getting some fresh air and hearty all-ages exercise amid the scenic splendor of New England’s greatest mountain range.

The options are altogether endless, and of course you’ve got a slew of outdoor attractions steps away from your Mountain Club room or suite at Loon Mountain, which opens Memorial Day for its summer season. Race the downhill tracks of the resort’s extensive mountain-biking trail network, ride the longest Gondola Skyride in the state to the top of Loon Peak, explore the Glacier Caves, pick out landmarks in a sea of peaks from Herbert’s Observation Tower, or enjoy a round or two of disc golf. A blast? You bet.

Clark’s Bears (110 US Route 3, Lincoln, NH)

Generations of families have made Clark’s Bears a White Mountain tradition. This amusement park and village, which opens Memorial Day Weekend, includes a famous and long-running show featuring trained black bears—a tradition the Clark family has been doing since 1949. Then there’s high-octane fun such as the Anaconda Escape rafting ride, the Water Blaster Boats, and the Old Man Climbing Tower, plus tours of multiple museums and no shortage of shopping.

Another classic attraction at Clark’s Bears is the train ride along the White Mountain Central Railroad, which’ll take you across a covered bridge over the Pemigewasset River and introduce you to the good-natured bluster of the territorial “Wolfman.”

Alpine Adventures (41 Main Street, Lincoln, NH)

More thrills await at Alpine Adventures, open all year round and offering a feast of supercharged family activities. Among them are multiple levels of ziplining, from the beginner-friendly Tree Top Canopy Tour to the more intense Skyrider and Super Skyrider tours, which include lines up to 1,600 feet long set 200 to 250 feet above the ground. Then there’s the self-guided Thrillsville challenge course—complete with a simulated free-fall experience—and the safari-style delights of the Off-Road Adventure Tour, carried out in fantastic 6WD Pinzgauer vehicles.
