Best Hotel for The Highland Games Festival in Lincoln, NH

Get your tartan on in the White Mountains of New Hampshire with a September getaway to The Mountain Club on Loon for one of the biggest traditional Scottish Highland Games in North America—indeed, in the world.

We’re referring, of course, to the New Hampshire Highland Games & Festival, which returns to Loon Mountain Resort Friday, September 16th through Sunday, September 18th. You couldn’t ask for more convenient accommodations for this truly delightful soiree than our slopeside resort.

The New Hampshire Highland Games & Festival in the White Mountains

The NH Highland Games & Festival is presented by NHSCOT (New Hampshire Gathering of the Scottish Clans), an organization dedicated to supporting and celebrating Scottish heritage in the Northeast. The event has been going on since 1976, and draws some of the largest crowds of any Highland Games on the continent.

The competition part of the affair covers a lot of territory, not least the Heavy Athletics category with feats of strength such as the iconic caber toss. But there are also piping, drumming, fiddling, Highland Dancing, and other heats, not to mention the absolutely must-see sheep-dog trials on Friday.

There’s an awful lot more than just the Games themselves, though. The festival includes plenty of live music, including roving pipe bands, as well as living-history reenactments and hands-on classes in such Scottish activities as stone-lifting and drumming. Explore traditional Scottish cuisine, and shop till you drop in the Vendor Village.

The grand White Mountains of New Hampshire, the loftiest country in all of the northeastern U.S., provide a suitably scenic backdrop for this transported slice of the Scottish Highlands.
